Pump jacks are made from a variety of different materials. The three most common are aluminum, steel and a composite of both. The pumps all operate in a similar way regardless of the material that they are made from. The additional components such as the poles and platforms that are used are sometimes made from the same material. This is not always the case, however, and many contractors use parts from different systems interchangeably to meet specific needs on a worksite. All jacks are designed to be durable although each has a different set of clear advantages. Several things distinguish the aluminum variety of pump jacks from those made of steel.

An aluminum pump jack is very durable. The properties of aluminum also make the devices very light. Jacks that are made from aluminum do not weigh as much as steel. This means that the jacks are very portable and can be moved around a construction site easily. Some companies use dozens of pump jacks to create multiple scaffoldings. It possible to transport large qualities of aluminum jacks without much difficulty because of the low weight. Aluminum systems also tend to use aluminum poles that are lightweight and easy to handle. This makes it possible for just one person to build and use a scaffold.

The different pump jack systems for scaffolding use different types of poles. The support poles are the columns that the jack attaches to in order to raise and lower the main platform. An aluminum jack uses an aluminum pole that has a layer of rubber along the back. The rubber creates the friction and resistance that is necessary in order to support the platform and to allow for easy movement up and down. The steel versions of the scaffolding system do not use steel or aluminum poles. Instead, steel jacks are normally used with wooden poles that are constructed at the worksite. The steel cuts into the wood to provide a secure support. Wooden poles are disposed of after use because the pressure warps the surface. Aluminum systems do not have this problem.

The overall cost of ownership is different depending on what type of system is chosen. An aluminum pump jack has a lower initial purchase cost. This cost remains low even when a complete system is purchased that includes aluminum platforms, poles and braces. Each aluminum component is reusable, durable and easy to handle. These features make aluminum jacks a very attractive option for companies that need to purchase a dozen or more jacks and platforms. A steel system is very durable but has a higher cost of ownership. The wooden poles must be replaced after every job. The weight of the steel makes it more difficult for one person to handle and erect a scaffold.
